MALAMULELE HOSPITAL (2)

Malamulele Hospital is the site of our first outreach, the pilot project in 2005 and from where our organisation's name was taken. It is situated on the northern end of the tarred road running through Malamulele, a small market town tucked away in the north east corner of Limpopo Province, north of Giyani, east of Thoyandou and west of Punda Maria. Malamulele Hospital, has 256 beds and serves a population of over 300 000 people, most of whom are Tsonga speaking.

Joy Mathye is the Senior Occupational Therapist (OT) at the hospital. She started working at the hospital in 2006 and has her hands full as until this year, she has been the only OT at the hospital. She completed her basic Bobath / NDT course in 2007 and she runs the weekly CP Clinic along with her physiotherapy (PT) colleagues and therapy assistants. There are now nearly 100 children who attend these Clinics each month – a huge increase from the 27 children we met there in 2005.

Malamulele Onward continues to maintain contact with the children and caregivers through the annual December visit. As we have been with some of the children since 2005, we have had the opportunity to learn much from them and they have been instrumental in helping us to modify and grow our model to meet their needs.

RETURN TO MALAMULELE HOSPITAL – DECEMBER 2010

Published in MALAMULELE HOSPITAL

annual-visitA small team returned to Malamulele Hospital in December 2010 for our Annual Visit. As this hospital was the site for our very first project, back in 2005, it remains a special place and we are so happy to see how the Cerebral Palsy Clinic has grown over the past five years.

Malamulele Hospital is the site of our first outreach, the pilot project in 2005 and from where our organisation's name was taken.

Location: Limpopo Province

In September 2005, four therapists (Estelle Brown, Andrea Fraser, Marga Marloth and Gillian Saloojee), all from Johannesburg, were joined by Louisa Lowe, a physiotherapist working at Elim Hospital, about 140 km from Malamulele, to assess and screen children for the pilot project. Sonto Nhlabathi, a research assistant and mother of a child with CP in Soweto, also joined the team and assisted with the parent interviews and assessments. All the therapists volunteered their time.
